Patricia Urquiola (Spain/Italy)
Founder and Owner, Studio Urquiola
For her outstanding international contribution to the Interiors profession, IFI – the International Federation of Interior Architects/ Designers has awarded Spanish/Italian designer/architect Patricia Urquiola the 2022 IFI PRIZE—Interiors’ highest individual accolade internationally.
The IFI PRIZE is awarded as part of IFI’s Global Awards Program (IFI GAP) which recognizes and awards design excellence at the world level. Announced at a special virtual ceremony on 21 February 2022, the founder and owner of Studio Urquiola was praised for her accomplishments and commitment to elevating the practice of Interior Architecture/ Design. She was recognized for the breadth of her work, scope of her achievements and contribution at an international level to the discipline.
Urquiola was credited by the IFI PRIZE 2022 jury as “commanding world-class distinction for the quality of her professional work and demonstrating visionary leadership, as well as an ongoing contribution to humanity through design. She represents the combined embodiment of the values, professionalism and achievement celebrated by the award.”
BIO
Patricia Urquiola studied architecture and design at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and completed her studies at the Politecnico di Milano, graduating under the mentorship of Achille Castiglioni. She founded Studio Urquiola in 2001 with her partner, Alberto Zontone, operating in the fields of Industrial Product Design, Architecture, Art Direction and Strategy Consulting. Urquiola has been the Creative Director of Cassina since 2015 and works with many important Italian and international design companies. She is part of the advisory board of the Politecnico of Milan and the Triennale Milano Museum.

Walter Mariotti (Italy)
Editorial Director, Domus
The editorial director of Italian magazine Domus, Walter Mariotti was honored with the 2022 IFI Design Journalism Award (IFI DJA) for delivering outstanding and impactful reporting and storytelling.
The jury for the IFI DJA described Mariotti as “an excellent champion of Domus’s support of Interior Design throughout his editorship, making him a very worthy winner of this award. His sustained commitment to advancing the creative industries and advocating for critical reflection in the design profession is crucial and should be commended.”
BIO
Walter Mariotti studied Philosophy in Siena and Harvard and Economics and Management at Bocconi in Milan. His professional career began as a researcher and professor, after which he entered Public Administration in the sectors of culture, public relations and strategic planning. Highlights of his journalism career include conceptually redesigning Panorama, for which he later became Deputy Editor-in-Chief, and establishing Periferie, conceived by Renzo Piano. In 2017, he was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Domus, with the task of conceiving, directing and developing the Domus System, including magazine, website, archive, events, and intelligence.

Steve Leung (Hong Kong, China)
IFI Past-President 2020-2022 / Founder, Steve Leung Design Group – SLD
Steve Leung, former President of IFI 2017-2020, Program Chairman of IFI GAP and founder of Steve Leung Design Group – SLD, was awarded for his service and commitment to IFI during his time as IFI President and member of the IFI Executive Board from 2014-2022.
BIO
Steve Leung is a leading international architect, interior and product designer born in Hong Kong SAR, China. His works reflect the projects’ unique characters with his contemporary touch, taking inspiration from the Asian culture and arts. Honored as the Winner of the 19th Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year Award, Steve’s projects have been credited with more than 130 design and corporate awards worldwide. Steve is the Founder of Steve Leung Design Group Ltd., which has 600 talented designers and dedicated professionals to work on projects in over 100 cities worldwide. Steve currently serves as President of IFI and on the Board of Directors of Hong Kong Design Centre, and in 2014 established “C Foundation” to actively promote the education and development of the region’s design industry.
Lilia de Jesus, PhD (Philippines)
Associate Professor; Senior Design Consultant, APJArchitects; IFI Board Member 2015-2017; PIID President 2017-2019
Lilia de Jesus, PhD, associate professor; senior design consultant, APJArchitects; former IFI Board Member 2015-2017; and former Philippine Institute of Interior Design President 2017-2019, was recognized for her ongoing academic, practice and volunteer work as a champion of the discipline in her country and region.
BIO
Lilia de Jesus, PhD has worn many hats in the interior design community as practitioner, educator and board member. She received both her Master’s in Art Education and Doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of the Philippines. She served for almost a decade as the president of the Council of Interior Design Educators (CIDE). She was made a Fellow by the Philippines Institute of Interior Designers (PIID) in 2014, where she served as Vice President from 2015-2017 and then President from 2017-2019. From 2015-2017 she was an IFI Board Member. In addition to practicing and her teaching at the University of Santo Tomas, Lilia is currently conducting several avenues of research where her interests could advance the multidisciplinary aspects of interior design as a program and a practice.
Joice Joppert Leal (Brazil)
Founder & CEO, Objeto Brasil Association
Joice Joppert Leal, founder & CEO, Objeto Brasil Association, was commended for her long-standing support and furthering of IFI’s mandate, as well as her tireless commitment to knowledge-sharing, design advocacy and spreading design awareness in Brazil and beyond.
BIO
Joice Joppert Leal is the Chief Executive Officer of Objeto Brasil, which she created in 1996 to disseminate and elevate all sectors of Brazilian design. Joice and her team have dedicated decades to promoting the importance of design across education, to the public and through collaboration with all levels of government, while cultivating and showcasing a robust design community in Brazil and the region. They have done this through exhibitions, publications, awards and partnerships. Prior to founding Objeto Brasil, she conceptualized and implemented Industrial Design Nucleus (NDI) and the DETEC Department of Technology and Industrial Design at the Federation of the State of São Paulo, directing both departments for over 20 years. She fostered the development of Design in Brazil, with programs alongside industries, teaching institutions, design companies and governments. She set up agreements with significant institutions including the World Bank, the IDB, MoMA, WIPO, UNDP, UNIDO.
IFI Design Distinction Award (IFI DDA) Winners
From a sustainable, community-centered school catering to 400 girls under the poverty line in Rajasthan, India; the modernization of Parisian barracks as a means of regenerating the city; to a private wine cave excavated into limestone along a secluded river bend in the USA; and a new typology self-service store for online shopping customers in Finland, the 2022 winners of second IFI Global Awards Program showcase the diversity of global Interiors practice and immense value of high-quality architecture/design worldwide.
At a virtual awards ceremony premiering on Monday 21 February 2022, 80 projects were recognized with IFI Design Distinction Awards, from a shortlist of 156 completed interiors from across the world.
The IFI Design Distinction Awards form part of the IFI Global Awards Program (IFI GAP), which recognizes and documents exemplary vision, talent and commitment showcased in the practice of Interior Architecture/Design today. The 2022 IFI DDA marked its second edition record-breaking entries and representative countries across ten different categories.
