About

IFI’s former IFI World Interiors for the Next Generation (IFI WING) was a worldwide competition designed to engage emerging Interior Architecture/Design talent. IFI WING aimed to inspire, cultivate and support the next generations of designers for their work as creative, renowned and well respected professionals. First initiated in 1999 as a 3-day intensive workshop, IFI WING evolved into an international competition that promoted the exchange of ideas and inspires creativity amongst young Interiors students and professionals. Entrants were encouraged, but not required, to work collaboratively with professional mentors, educators and local artists/craftsmen throughout the design development process.

By initiating an in-depth exploration of global design practice and its contemporary relevance, IFI WING encouraged an unleashing of the imagination and inspired young designers to embrace the unlimited possibilities of design innovation. Young Interior Architects/Designers and place-makers were called upon to submit solutions that built upon the criteria for a unified design profession as established by the IFI Interiors Declaration. Design submissions were evaluated and selected by an international leadership jury of Interiors professionals. Winners were selected based on their unique contribution and capacity to incorporate the value, relevance, responsibility, culture, business, knowledge and identity of interior design practice for a global audience.

The prize included an all-expenses-paid travel and accommodations to attend the  biennial IFI CONGRESS and IFI General Assembly (GA), where winners were ceremoniously awarded and required to make a short presentation to delegates of the IFI GA. Taking place in a different world region/nation every two years, IFI WING winners were invited to participate in this important world design Interiors summit. As part of this prize, IFI offered IFI WING winners the opportunity to participate in stimulating programs and exciting social events with world-class innovators and creative professionals

Past WING Winners

Under the topic THINK/WORK, IFI WING 2013 called for design solutions that supported work, an essential and universal societal activity which fosters growth and expansion. Sponsored by Teknion who creates furniture that connects people, technology and spaces, the competition addressed the need to imagine different solutions and develop innovative approaches and practices, proposing alternative thinking about new methodologies, new solutions, and new goals to satisfy our future work environment.

The winning project was ‘Blob: Innovative Workspace’, created by Alina Boukovsky and Yirat Lorenz, 3rd year Interior Design students from the College of Management Academic Studies in Rishon LeZion, Israel. Based on the fact that personal space has reduced dramatically in the modern era as result of a demographic shift, the design team took the recent trend to create products containing a multitude of uses in one element, or convergences, to develop a workspace model that meets both functional and decorative aspects. The students attended the 26th IFI General Assembly and Design Congress 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, benefiting from the opportunity to meet some of the best Interiors professionals in the world.
